Washington-Lewis DAR Chapter Market Dedication

By Pamela Wright posted 10-03-2023 02:49 PM

What an honor to join the members of the Washington-Lewis DAR Chapter in Fredericksburg, Virginia, for the dedication of a historical marker placed at the monument to Mary Washington, “the mother of the father of our country.” The Mary Washington Monument holds the distinction as the first monument in the United States funded by women to honor a woman. The first resolution in 1890 of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was a pledge to complete the monument. Following the dedication ceremony, attendees gathered for a reception at Historic Kenmore, home of George Washington’s sister, Betty Washington Lewis.
