It’s always interesting to learn about the reasons behind the names of DAR chapters. Many are named for women, and this month’s Website of the Month is a chapter that selected their namesake as a “woman from American history who had been overlooked through time.” While they considered several women, they ultimately chose Phillis Wheatley. How appropriate that we announce on this first day of March, the January Website of the Month winner as the Phillis Wheatley Chapter, NSDAR, from Haymarket, Virginia! Congratulations, to you!

Our judges evaluated nine websites this month. Once again, we thank all of the chapters who have been creating new websites and polishing older sites. You are sharing your sparkle with your communities and encouraging new women to join you in your Service to America.

Here are a few comments from our PR and Media judges highlighting what they liked about the site, along with a few suggestions to consider.

  • Solid site! Super easy to follow, like the colors and layout. You might add a few more pictures. Well done!
  • Very nice layout and information was great!
  • Nice website. I like how your menu buttons are color coordinated to show when you link to the National site vs. staying on yours. Nice touch. Keep adding more pictures over time. It is my understanding that you meet primarily electronically; if so, consider sharing this information on your site as it can be a selling point.
  • I personally love the background of the brick wall. Please add more to your chapter projects page, so prospective members can learn more about what you do. I’m sure you do more that what you have shown. Just a lovely site!
  • I like the content, but find the contrast on the brick background difficult to read on a variety of devices. (Note: You see that judges look for different things. This judge has studied your site on a computer screen, tablet, and phone screen which can look different. The previous judge liked the brick background, but think about how you could improve it for other devices.)
  • DAR missions are clearly conveyed and activities are described well.
  • Nice tie-in to the Forgotten Patriots at the end of the story of Phillis Wheatley.
  • I liked the simplicity of your site. It’s just very easy to learn about your chapter.

Once again, congratulations and thank you for this beautiful website!
