We congratulate this month’s April Website of the Month, the Knickerbocker Chapter from New York, New York. You really are “spreading the news.” (Please excuse the quote…I couldn’t help myself.)
Those of us on this committee have “met” a variety of Daughters through their websites since this contest began. Each chapter has shared the work they do, and while each has its own ways of demonstrating the chapter's work with historic preservation, education, and patriotism, we all recognize the importance of the service of all Daughters of the American Revolution. We are so proud of the work you do, and we know you will continue that work.
Your websites are important in getting your message across to your communities and to prospective members.
Our judges only evaluated five websites this month, and yours is the one that (here I go again) made us “want to be a part of it.” Seriously, your active chapter was a “hit” with us. Here are a few comments, along with a few suggestions to consider.
- Wonderful website! Your home page is interesting, and I appreciate the background color changes.
- I love your membership page — lots of great information, but not too overwhelming to a PM. It is well set-up, easy to follow, and shows lots of great involvement, even having photos of all your chapter officers with smiling faces. It’s a huge accomplishment and makes your website stand out!
- Excellent membership page! It’s friendly, welcoming, and helpful. It appears that you must have a large membership based on the number of patriots. How are you encouraging participation among members? That might be something to address to prospective members about how they can get involved.
- Two judges had different opinions about your line, “Revolutionary then, Revolutionary now.” One thought the wording was “not the best,” and the other thought it was “fabulous!” We never know how what we have written will be interpreted, so you might intersperse with more photos that show how you are “Revolutionary now.”
- Lovely site. Great blend of photos and text. Easy to follow.
- Think about how your website works on all devices. “On an iPad, there is overlapping text and photos throughout the site.”
- Wish photo gallery was interspersed more throughout. For the older photos from 2018 and 2020, consider removing the years from the captions to keep the content feeling current.
- Consider a home page signature image and moving current ones to the Photo Gallery. Great graphics showcasing members in action.
- Great use of “drop down” menus to assist with navigation.
So you see, our judges have varying opinions and suggestions for you. It’s your website, so it’s up to you. We appreciate what you have done, and we wish you the best as you keep this website fresh and exciting in the future.
